Each week, Power Technology’s journalists pick out insights from company filings that highlight sentiments in our sector. These filings signals are based on GlobalData’s analysis of earnings statements, call transcripts, investor presentations and sustainability reports. They tell us about key topics on the minds of business leaders and investors, and the themes driving a company’s activities.
This new, thematic filings coverage is powered by GlobalData’s underlying Disruptor data which tracks all major deals, patents, company filings, hiring patterns and social media buzz across our sectors.
According to GlobalData’s analysis of company filings, the Asia-Pacific region had the most significant emphasis on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues within the power sector globally over the last 90 days.
GlobalData identified 1,370 mentions in filings within the region of “ESG” as a term, almost double that of North America, the next closest with 749 mentions. This represents a continuing trend for the Asia-Pacific region, as big companies focus on ESG-related issues to distinguish themselves from smaller businesses without an international reputation. GlobalData has identified 4,348 mentions of “ESG” within filings in the region since the beginning of 2023, the highest of any region globally.
Companies within the top ten mentioning ESG issues within filings include Tata Power and Tenaga Nasional. Analysis found that the former has made 17 mentions of ESG across four separate filings over the last 90 days and 62 mentions of ESG issues in filings over the last five years. Tenaga Nasional made 113 mentions of ESG-related issues in its most recent annual report, and it has made a total of 39 ESG-specific filings since 2018.
China and India represent two of the fastest-growing economies in the area, experiencing rapid social uplifting, urbanisation, and industrialisation. As companies in the region expand and invest in the growing potential of the power industry, ESG looks set to remain a central concern for the region.
