Solar technology developer SunPower has sold concentrator cell packages totaling more than 70MW capacity to Huaxia Concentrated Photovoltaic Power in inner Mongolia, China.
According to the company the packages will be used for the first phase of two SunPower C7 Tracker (C7) projects.
The projects, which include a 20-MW project in Saihan and a 100-MW project in Wuchuan, are set for completion in 2015.
Both the projects are located in Hohhot, inner Mongolia.
The definitive agreement for Huaxia Concentrated Photovoltaic Power JV, which comprises SunPower, Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor, Inner Mongolia Power and Hohhot Jinqiao City Development, was initially signed in December 2012, and officially approved and registered in November 2013.
As of now, a 300MW C7 receiver manufacturing plant has been established at Jinqiao Development Zone in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, while a 50MW production line is now in operation.
The C7 features single-axis tracking technology with rows of parabolic mirrors and Maxeon solar cells with efficiencies of up to 24.5%.
According to SunPower, the parabolic mirrors have been designed to reduce the number of cells required to generate electricity, thus helpful in reducing the cost of energy.
SunPower president and CEO Tom Werner said the latest sale of solar cell packages signifies the company's key step to foray into Chinese market.
"Working together with our strong local partners, we believe that we can deploy significant volumes of our SunPower C7 Tracker power plants to help serve China's growing need for clean power," Werner said.
