Power cable manufacturer NKT has secured a significant framework agreement with Dutch distribution system operator Enexis Netbeheer to supply medium voltage (MV) power cables.
The move is part of an initiative to upgrade and expand the power grid in the Netherlands.
Enexis Netbeheer is a Dutch distribution system operator that manages an electricity cable network of more than 150,000km. It has committed to an eight-year plan to lay several thousand kilometres of underground power cables across the Dutch provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Brabant and Limburg, in preparation for the anticipated surge in renewable energy production.
Enexis CEO Rutger van der Leeuw stated: “We are delighted that NKT will be a supplier for our expansion operation over the coming years.
“We want to guarantee supply security of the requisite cables on par with increasing volumes, which is why we are scaling up the number of power cable suppliers.
“For the Enexis service area alone, we need a total power cable length that would take us around the world twice. We are really talking about a staggering amount of cable. We look forward to our future collaboration.”

By GlobalDataFrom mid-2025, NKT will begin to deliver 600km of MV power cables annually until 2033 under the framework agreement.
The contract also includes an option for a four-year extension, potentially broadening the partnership between NKT and Enexis Netbeheer.
Most of the cables will be produced at NKT’s factory in Asnaes, Denmark. This facility is set for expansion as part of NKT’s strategic investment, in enhancing three of its MV cable factories to meet increasing demand.
In 2023, the Netherlands made significant strides in renewable energy production, with 48% of its electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind and water.
Electricity production from wind energy saw a 35% year-on-year increase, while solar energy production rose by 24%.
NKT Applications executive vice-president Carlos Fernandez stated: “We are proud to be a key supplier. We have a long history with Enexis and have supplied medium-voltage cables to many projects over the years.
“We look forward to strengthening our relationship even further with this framework agreement supporting their efforts to upgrade the Dutch electricity grid as well as connect more renewables projects.”
In September 2024, NKT completed cable repair work at the 600MW Gemini wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands.
