Danish energy company Ørsted has contracted Bladt Industries and Steelwind Nordenham to supply monopile foundations for two of its German offshore wind farms.

For the Gode Wind III (242MW) and Borkum Riffgrund III (900MW) wind farms, the two companies will supply a total of 107 monopile foundations.

The supply will also include the foundation for the Gode Wind III offshore substation.

Ørsted chief operating officer Richard Hunter said: “Our global pipeline of offshore wind projects allows us to sign strategic volume contracts with the supply chain to ensure that key components are available to us when we need them.

“At the same time, by placing large volume orders, we can give suppliers the visibility they need to invest in their manufacturing facilities and build long-term capacity, which will benefit the whole industry and thereby benefit the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.”

Steelwind Nordenham has agreed to deliver 66 monopiles for the project, while Bladt Industries will supply 41 monopiles.

Each monopile will measure 100m in length and around 10m in width, weighing at least 1,200t.

Ørsted has also secured call-off rights with the two suppliers for further volume for other projects if required.

Both projects will be equipped with Siemens Gamesa’s 11MW offshore wind turbines.

Subject to final investment decisions, Gode Wind III and Borkum Riffgrund III are expected to come online by 2024 and 2025 respectively.

Steelwind Nordenham managing director Andreas Liessem said: “The cooperation with Ørsted for the construction of Borkum Riffgrund III and Gode Wind III proves that Steelwind Nordenham has established itself in the market as a reliable manufacturer of high-quality XL monopiles.

“We are proud to make a significant contribution to the energy transition with our monopiles, which are made of quality steel from our parent company Dillinger.”

In July, Ørsted selected inspection and certification provider UL to certify wind turbines and foundations for the two wind projects.
