Amazon to expand renewable energy capacity in Australia to 1GW

The new portfolio includes a wind farm, three solar-battery hybrids, four solar projects and the Mokoan Solar Farm's battery installation.

Amazon Australia has signed nine new power purchase agreements (PPA), adding 430MW of clean energy and bringing its total capacity to nearly 1GW nationwide once fully operational.

The new portfolio encompasses a wind farm, three utility-scale solar and battery hybrids, four distributed solar-battery projects and a battery installation at the Mokoan Solar Farm.

These efforts aim to enhance grid reliability and expand the carbon-free energy supply across New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria.

In NSW, there is the Muswellbrook Solar Farm with battery storage developed by OX2, the Forest Glen Solar Farm with battery storage by X-ELIO and the Stanbridge Solar Farm with battery storage from Anza.

In Victoria, the projects include the Golden Plains 2 wind farm by TagEnergy and solar farms with battery storage at Laceby, Indigo, Barnawartha and Mooroopna by Anza.

The portfolio also includes a battery storage installation at the Amazon-supported Mokoan Solar Farm, developed by European Energy.

This venture constitutes Amazon's biggest single-year renewable energy investment in Australia, aligning with its aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under the Climate Pledge.

The projects also support regional communities by pairing renewable energy with existing land uses. The Muswellbrook Solar Farm is being built on rehabilitated brownfield land including former coal mining sites, helping to drive environmental restoration.

Amazon's investment in renewable energy not only powers its operations but also contributes new sources of carbon-free energy to the common power grid used by homes, hospitals and schools.

Since 2020, the company has invested around A$2.8bn ($2bn) in Australian renewable energy projects.

Upon completion, these projects will provide enough renewable energy to power more than 500,000 Australian households each year.

In June 2025, Amazon revealed plans to invest A$20bn from 2025 to 2029 to expand, operate and maintain its data centre infrastructure in Australia.

This investment aligns with the Australian Government's efforts to enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth through AI innovation.
