Ignitis Renewables has received a positive environmental impact assessment (EIA) decision from the Environmental Protection Agency of Lithuania for the Curonian Nord offshore wind project.
The decision means the project may proceed, subject to compliance with the mitigation measures specified in the assessment.
The EIA report was prepared in line with Lithuanian law and international standards. It assessed potential effects on the marine ecosystem, landscape, biodiversity, public health and fisheries, as well as broader environmental and social factors.
The Curonian Nord offshore wind farm, planned for the Baltic Sea, will cover roughly 120km² and be located at least 37km from Lithuania’s coastline.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s decision is based on extensive environmental studies and consultations.
These included work with local communities, stakeholder groups and regulatory authorities to ensure the project met both national and international requirements.
The report outlines a set of mitigation actions intended to reduce any impact on biodiversity and marine life during both construction and operation. They include long-term monitoring and adaptive management practices intended to minimise environmental effects.
Curonian Nord project director Anne-Marie Roikjær said: “The positive decision is a significant milestone for the Curonian Nord project. It confirms that, following extensive environmental studies, stakeholder engagement and close cooperation with the responsible authorities, the project can move forward while ensuring high environmental standards. We appreciate the contribution of everyone involved in this process.”
Curonian Nord is expected to have a total planned capacity of approximately 700MW, potentially generating around 3TW-hours of electricity annually. This output could meet a quarter of Lithuania’s current electricity demand.
Under the terms of the EIA decision and the development permit, Ignitis Renewables will continue with the remaining development and permitting work required before a construction permit can be issued, anticipated in 2027.

In October 2025, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announced plans to provide a loan of €79.5m ($92.3m) to Ignitis Group to support the development of the 314MW Kelmė wind farm in the Baltic region.
