Data4, a data centre operator in Europe, has entered a 12-year nuclear production allocation contract (CAPN) with EDF.

This deal ensures a decarbonised electricity supply for its French data centres, making Data4 the first operator in France to secure such an agreement with EDF.

The contract grants Data4 an allocation of 40MW from EDF's nuclear fleet, with initial deliveries set to commence in 2026.

The agreement includes a cost and risk-sharing mechanism and is expected to provide around 230GWh annually.

This nuclear production allocation is reportedly a key component of Data4's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and meet its environmental targets.

Data4 COO François Stérin said: “We are extremely proud to sign this first low-carbon CAPN with EDF, a longstanding partner and a key player in France’s energy transition.

“This contract is not only a strong environmental commitment; it is also a cornerstone of our growth and competitiveness strategy. Combined with renewable energy purchase agreements, it guarantees reliable, resilient, and continuous access to low-carbon energy at a controlled long-term cost - a considerable advantage for our clients and the development of our infrastructure.”

EDF Group Customers, Services & Territories executive director Marc Benayoun said: “EDF is pleased to sign a nuclear production allocation contract with Data4, a European data centre operator.

“This partnership will enable Data4 to benefit from a low-carbon, competitive, and available electricity supply, which is a key asset for digital players. This initiative is fully aligned with EDF’s commitment to supporting the development of data centres in France and contributing to the country’s energy and industrial sovereignty.”

Recently, EDF announced a one-year extension of operations for two of its UK nuclear power stations, Heysham 1 and Hartlepool, now set to generate electricity until March 2028.

This extension, which follows a series of positive graphite inspections, is in line with EDF's strategy to ensure energy security and complements the lifetime extensions of its four advanced gas-cooled reactor stations in December 2024.
