Energiequelle has started construction work on the Lüben Wind Farm in the Gifhorn district of Lower Saxony, Germany.

The project will feature five Enercon E-138 turbines, each with a hub height of 160m and an individual capacity of 4.26MW.

Together, the turbines are expected to produce around 77 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which could supply approximately 22,000 households in the Wittingen area.

Authorities approved the Lüben project in December 2024, followed by the Federal Network Agency award during the February tender for onshore wind energy.

Construction activities have commenced with initial work on access roads.

Energiequelle plans to commission the wind farm during the second and third quarters of 2027.

This development follows the company’s previous project in the municipality, the Teschendorf Wind Farm, which was commissioned last autumn and is located near Lüben. Lüben is now the second Energiequelle wind farm in Wittingen within a year.

The company has introduced financial participation models for local stakeholders. Residents of Lüben will be eligible for an annual electricity bonus of €200 ($232).

In line with Section 6 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), Energiequelle will pay Wittingen €0.002 for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) generated by the wind farm, amounting to around €154,000 per year.

The Lower Saxony Participation Act increases this by another €0.001/kWh, adding approximately €77,000 annually for the municipality.

Landowners involved with the project have agreed to allocate part of their lease payments to a newly established association aimed at supporting local investments.

Energiequelle project leader Tina Hermerding said: “The regional planning process lasted more than ten years and required a great deal of patience. I am all the happier that we can now move into the implementation phase. My thanks go to everyone involved for their perseverance and constructive cooperation.”
