GNA II, a gas-fired thermal power plant in Brazil with an installed capacity of 1.7GW, has suspended operations following equipment failure on 10 August, Reuters reported.
The plant is located at the Port of Açu in Rio de Janeiro and began commercial operations in January 2025.
GNA II is being developed by Gás Natural Açu (GNA), a joint venture (JV) involving Siemens Energy, bp and Chinese State Power Investment Corporation subsidiary SPIC Brasil.
A failure in the steam turbine circuit breaker is said to have impacted the unit’s step-up transformer, leading to the shutdown.
No injuries or environmental impacts were reported as a result of the incident.
Technical staff and the equipment manufacturer have been assessing the causes of the failure and reviewing plans for resuming operations.
Brazil’s national grid operator, ONS, was notified of the shutdown and the outage has been reflected in the dispatch schedule.
The facility is part of a wider effort to expand Brazil’s natural gas-to-power infrastructure.
GNA II constitutes the second phase of the GNA project, following the inauguration of the 1.3GW GNA I unit in September 2021.
The integrated project, when fully operational, will supply electricity to an estimated 14 million homes.
In February 2021, SPIC Brasil acquired a 33% interest in both GNA I and GNA II.
Investigations into the equipment failure are ongoing as the JV considers the next steps.
In July 2026, Siemens Energy secured contracts to supply power generation technology and long-term maintenance services for two new independent power producer projects in Oman, aimed at boosting the country's electricity output by nearly 20%.
The Misfah and Duqm combined-cycle gas turbine plants are expected to deliver a combined capacity of approximately 2.6GW, providing electricity to more than two million people.
