Haizea Wind Group has completed delivery of the largest monopiles ever manufactured in southern Europe, which will be used at Ørsted's 2.9GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

The monopiles, measuring 11m in diameter, more than 105m in length and weighing in excess of 2,300t each, are among the largest such structures produced in Europe to date.

The Hornsea 3 site, located around 120km off the Norfolk coast in the UK, is expected to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

It aims to supply electricity to more than 3.3 million homes in the UK once fully operational.

The monopiles were produced at Haizea Wind Group’s facility at the Port of Bilbao in Spain, which spans more than 200,000m² and includes six production halls, along with storage space for towers and monopiles.

More than 900 staff work at the site, which has undergone expansion to accommodate the manufacture of components for wind turbines of more than 15MW.

The logistics of preparing and transporting these structures involved several companies. Grúas Aguado coordinated transport and preparation within the port, while Cadeler managed both load-out and load-in operations.

Mammoet used self-propelled modular transporters to move the monopiles.

Haizea Wind Group has supplied offshore wind towers and monopiles for various international projects including Borssele 1 & 2, Dogger Bank, East Anglia One, Hollandse Kust Zuid, Hornsea Two, Hywind Tampen, Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Nazaire and Seamade.

The company reported that its facility in Spain is currently the only one in the country capable of producing structures of this scale.

In May 2026, Cadeler installed the first fully commissioned monopile foundation at the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.
