Iberdrola, through its Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia, has completed the energisation of the last segment of the Alto Paranaíba project, finalising one of Brazil’s largest electricity transmission initiatives, ahead of schedule.

The project now substantially increases the transmission capacity between northern Minas Gerais and São Paulo, strengthening the National Interconnected System.

The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) awarded Neoenergia the Alto Paranaíba lot during auction 001/2022.

The project required an investment close to 4.2bn reais ($781m) and includes total infrastructure comprising 1,600km of transmission lines, 3,250 towers and six substations.

This makes it the largest project of its kind undertaken by Neoenergia in Brazil.

According to Iberdrola, works pertaining to the transmission project concluded more than 15 months earlier than stipulated by the ANEEL deadline.

As part of the process, teams completed all foundation works and erected almost every planned tower across the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo.

The Alto Paranaíba project moved into its final phase in October 2025. At that time, Iberdrola stated that cable installation covered more than 1,200km and construction work was 93% completed.

In September 2025, Neoenergia delivered a new segment in northern Minas Gerais, including upgrades to the Arinos II and Paracatu IV substations and constructing a 500kV line with nearly 800 towers spanning seven municipalities.

The Alto Paranaíba project aims to accommodate growing electricity demand and support the expansion of renewable energy generation in Brazil’s interior regions.

It is expected to enhance grid reliability and energy flow between critical areas.

Neoenergia has operated in Brazil since 1997, expanding through acquisitions such as Elektro in 2017 and CEB Distribuição in Brasília in 2021.
