Mitsubishi Power secures $5.2bn gas turbine power plant contract in Taiwan

The project will comprise five units that will utilise M501JAC (J-Series Air-Cooled) gas turbines.

Mitsubishi Power, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured a contract for a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant at the Tung Hsiao Power Plant, which is operated by Taiwan Power Company.

This project, located in Taiwan’s Miaoli County, will have a total capacity of 2.8GW.

The contract, valued at approximately Y760bn ($5.2bn), is a full turnkey project that will be executed in partnership with CTCI Corporation, a Taiwan-based engineering and construction company.

The project will consist of five units that will utilise M501JAC (J-Series Air-Cooled) gas turbines.

This development is part of Taiwan's long-term strategy to enhance its power supply, focusing on replacing older plants with new facilities to boost generation capacity while reducing environmental impacts.

The initiative aims to meet the increasing electricity demand from both the industrial and residential sectors and supports Taiwan's objectives for net-zero emissions.

The new units are expected to begin operations sequentially from 2030 to 2031.

Mitsubishi Power will deliver the gas turbines, steam turbines, and auxiliary equipment, with Mitsubishi Generator supplying the generators.

CTCI will manage the construction and balance of plant aspects.

The new facility will be located next to existing GTCC power plants that were updated in the first phase of the renewal plan, which includes three units with M501J gas turbines that have been operational since 2018.

These units were part of a previous contract awarded to Mitsubishi Power and CTCI in 2013.

This latest agreement highlights the established relationship with Taiwan Power, built on a history of successful projects.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to continue promoting the use of GTCC power plants and other 'efficient' gas turbine technologies to support energy decarbonisation efforts.

In January this year, Mitsubishi Power completed the 1.4GW Hin Kong natural GTCC power plant in Thailand.
