NHOA Energy has secured two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Italy with a combined stored capacity of approximately 600 megawatt-hours (MWh) and a power output of 90MW.

These projects, awarded by an independent entity in the renewables and energy transition sector, are the company's first under Italy's new MACSE (Meccanismo di Approvvigionamento di Capacità di Stoccaggio Elettrico) mechanism aimed at long-duration storage.

These projects will be located in Campania and Sardinia, representing an important development in NHOA Energy's BESS footprint within the Italian market.

Construction at the sites is scheduled to begin by September 2026, with commissioning expected to align with the January 2028 startup requirement stipulated by the MACSE framework.

The projects are backed financially by a coalition of leading Italian and international financial institutions, underscoring NHOA Energy's role as both technology provider and turnkey contractor.

This development is said to leverage the company's local and global expertise, understanding of standards and regulations, and insight into the challenges facing critical infrastructure resilience.

NHOA Energy vice-president EMEA Fabrizio Ciaccia said: “Following the BESS deployed under Terna Storage Lab, UPI, Fast Reserve and Capacity Market schemes, these projects represent another major step forward for NHOA Energy in Italy, combining new market mechanisms, advanced proprietary technology and a strong industrial partnership.

“They confirm our ability to deliver complex, utility-scale storage systems that support grid flexibility and the energy transition, despite the very challenging context, while affirming our capabilities to maintain a high level of competitiveness in tight-margin environments.”

Last month, NHOA Energy, in collaboration with EnergyAustralia and Enerven, launched a BESS project with a capacity of 245MWh in Hallett, South Australia.
