Ola Electric Mobility has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Axis Energy to explore the deployment of up to 20GW-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) by 2032.

This marks the first large-scale partnership for Ola Mahashakti, the company’s new energy storage platform for industrial, commercial and utility-scale applications, which is due to launch on 15 August.

The agreement with Axis Energy is intended to demonstrate the scale of the projects Mahashakti aims to address and establishes utility-scale BESS as a new focus area for Ola Electric.

Under the MoU, the companies foresee an annual ramp-up to 5GWh of capacity from 2028.

Axis Energy is developing a significant pipeline of storage-integrated renewable projects in India.

The company has secured grid approvals for projects totalling more than 3.75GW in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh and has a further pipeline of approximately 3.5GW.

These ventures, which include firm and dispatchable renewable energy, hybrid and other non-solar configurations, require large-scale BESS solutions to manage renewable energy integration, strengthen grid reliability and support continuous clean power delivery.

Axis Energy Ventures chairman and managing director Ravi Kumar Reddy Kataru said: “As our renewable energy portfolio continues to expand, battery energy storage is quintessential to enabling reliable, round-the-clock clean power.

“This MoU marks an important step towards evaluating indigenous battery storage solutions that will support the next phase of our renewable energy growth.”

According to figures cited in the MoU, India may require more than 400GWh of energy storage by 2032, as estimated by the Central Electricity Authority.

Ola Electric says its Mahashakti platform will offer a locally designed and manufactured BESS that targets various applications including renewable integration, industrial use, grid infrastructure and data centres.

The company’s vertically integrated model covers cell technology to system engineering to offer customers more control over safety, performance and the supply chain, as well as a lower total cost of ownership.
