Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC) has announced plans for a €1.5bn ($1.72bn) AI data centre campus in Seinäjoki, Finland, in what is set to become one of the country’s largest inward investment projects.
The first phase of the development will provide 110MW of IT capacity, with the wider site designed to expand to more than 550MW, with a potential investment value exceeding €7.5bn. The full campus, known as SJK01, is set to support large-scale AI and machine learning (ML) workloads and is expected to become one of Europe’s largest AI infrastructure developments.
Pure DC said the first phase is already fully leased, with the substation serving the initial data hall completed and operational. The company has also secured the required planning approvals and power capacity for the project.
The 370-acre site will be developed around modular 40MW “AI-ready” units designed to accommodate high-density computing systems. The data halls will use direct liquid cooling technology to manage the heat generated by next-generation AI hardware, while maintaining closed-loop cooling systems that avoid operational water consumption.
The project is being developed with local partner SDC Ventures and is expected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs over a decade. Pure DC said it will also support longer-term employment through skills programmes with local education providers including Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and vocational institutions.
Finland’s renewable electricity resources, stable grid and cooler climate have made it an increasingly attractive location for energy-intensive digital infrastructure. The campus will have access to more than 700 megavolt-amperes of renewable power and will incorporate waste heat recovery for use in district heating networks.
Gary Wojtaszek, executive chairman and interim CEO of Pure DC, said the development aimed to create an AI ecosystem that supports both global technology companies and Finnish entrepreneurs.
The investment represents the largest announced project in Finland by a UK-headquartered company. UK and Finnish officials said the development would strengthen digital infrastructure links between the two countries and support the growth of AI capabilities in Europe.
Pure DC currently has more than 1GW of data centre capacity either operational or under development across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
