Renewable energy company Sonnedix has entered into three power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Copec EMOAC for the Librillo project, a 117MW stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Taltal, in the Antofagasta region of Chile.

The BESS project can deliver 643.8MW-hours (MWh) over five hours each day.

The collaboration enables Copec EMOAC to incorporate nighttime energy into its portfolio using the BESS developed by Sonnedix, providing a reliable and adaptable energy supply.

This development promotes the integration of clean energy into the northern Chilean electricity grid.

Copec EMOAC general manager Vannia Toro said: “These agreements drive the development of storage in Chile’s electricity system, improving renewable energy management and increasing flexibility.

“The integration of nighttime energy through BESS optimises the use of clean generation and strengthens supply security and competitiveness.

“At Copec EMOAC, we are committed to continuing the promotion of partnerships that contribute to a more resilient, efficient and sustainable energy matrix for the country.”

The agreement includes supply integration at the Francisco node, enhancing solar energy management and reducing variability.

Commercial operations are anticipated by April 2027.

By securing these PPAs, Sonnedix enhances its role as a key partner for major clients seeking clean energy, and solidifies its leadership in hybrid and storage solutions.

These are crucial for optimising renewable energy utilisation, grid stabilisation and curtailment reduction.

Since beginning operations in 2015, Sonnedix Chile has grown to manage 1GW of capacity across 40 projects, with an additional 117MW under construction and a pipeline exceeding 1.8GW.

Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann said: “The signing of these three PPAs with Copec EMOAC represents a major milestone in our global storage strategy.

“The Sonnedix Librillo BESS project demonstrates how we transform renewable energy into a reliable and dispatchable source, adding flexibility to Chile’s electricity system while creating long-term value for our customers.”
