Veolia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Star Energy to advance geothermal energy for the UK's net zero targets.

The two companies aim to support the UK’s net-zero objectives by harnessing geothermal energy as a renewable and low-carbon heat source.

The two companies will focus on replacing fossil fuel-based energy in district heating systems, commercial properties, hospitals and educational facilities.

By tapping into geothermal energy, both companies plan to provide a sustainable and reliable heating solution to help meet the country's energy needs.

Veolia and Star Energy will collaborate on developing geothermal solutions through advanced modelling, seismic studies and directional drilling techniques.

These systems, based on tried-and-tested technologies, can integrate into existing heating infrastructure with minimal disruption.

Veolia will be offering its expertise in designing and managing energy networks, currently overseeing more than 120 community heating schemes across the UK.

The company also operates around 600 district heating networks worldwide, covering 7,000km of heat mains, ensuring the project’s technical and operational feasibility.

Star Energy CEO Ross Glover stated: “Star Energy is playing a key role in the UK’s transition to sustainable and predictable heat provision, and geothermal has an important role to play in the UK’s energy transition by providing a home-grown, predictable, renewable heat option for businesses and households, contributing to the government’s 2050 net-zero ambitions.

“We look forward to working with the Veolia teams and developing new projects using our unique expertise, gained over decades in the energy sector.

“Through partnerships such as this, we fully expect our geothermal business to grow significantly as it delivers to customer requirements to secure and decarbonise their energy supply.”
