A number of major players in the European nuclear power industry have written an open letter to the EU, calling on the bloc to unify its nuclear policies to encourage greater investment in the sector, with nuclear power set to play a key role in the EU’s energy mix post-Covid 19.
According to figures from the World Nuclear Association, the EU relied on nuclear power for 26% of its energy as of February of this year, a number comparable to that of renewable power, which contributed 28% of the bloc’s electricity. As the largest energy importer in the world, bringing in 55% of its energy at an annual cost of up to $390bn, supporters of nuclear power have long campaigned for a greater reliance on nuclear within the EU.
