Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has completed cable installation at the 806MW Vineyard Wind 1 offshore Massachusetts, US.

The company secured the contract for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system in May 2019.

The cable system includes two 220kV three-core cables along with extruded cross-linked polyethylene insulation. It will transmit the power generated from the wind farm to the mainland power grid.

Prysmian manufactured 134km of submarine power cables at its facilities in Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy.

The cable installation work was conducted by the company’s Cable Enterprise and Ulisse cable-laying vessels.

Prysmian Group EVP of Projects BU Hakan Ozmen stated: “We are proud to have completed such an important and strategic project that confirms the United States’ acceleration towards the energy transition.

“Following the successful completion of the Viking Link cable operation, Prysmian further confirms its capability to smoothly execute important projects included in its portfolio.”

Prysmian Group Projects BU head of project operations Alberto Boffelli stated: “With Vineyard Wind 1, we have demonstrated to the market our ability to bring our expertise, state-of-the-art cable technology and installation capabilities to the US market.

“Thanks to our investment in a new cable plant at Brayton Point, Massachusetts, we are committed to reinforcing our footprint in the US, supporting the growing offshore wind market.”

To be located 15 miles (24km) offshore Martha’s Vineyard, the Vineyard Wind 1 project features 62 wind turbines and will generate enough clean energy for 400,000 households every year in Massachusetts.

Offshore construction on the project began in 2022 and the offshore substation was installed in July 2023.
