Algeria’s Energy Transition and Renewable Energies Ministry is preparing to issue the tender to develop 1GW of solar generation capacity.
The scheme, to be split into ten 100MW projects, is part of a programme called Tafouk 1, which aims to increase domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to 4GW by 2024.

Algeria’s installed solar PV capacity, as of end 2019, stood at 458MW, or roughly 2% of total installed power generation capacity.
The government agency, which the Algerian Government recently authorised to manage and supervise the procurement process, is understood to be drafting the power-purchase agreements (PPAs) for the projects which will be developed using an independent power producer (IPP) model.
Algeria expects the project to generate between $3.2bn and $3.6bn in investment.
The country’s National Renewable Energy and Efficiency Development Plan, announced in 2015, aims to increase the domestic renewable generation capacity to 22GW, or 27% of the total domestic generation capacity, by 2030.
