Power industry tenders in Middle East and Africa for April 2021 up 80%

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders activity in April 2021 saw 169 tenders announced, marking a rise of 80% over the last 12-month average of 94, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in April 2021: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in April 2021 with 101 tenders and a share of 59.8%, up 7.2% over the previous month and up 173% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Bahrain with eight tenders and a share of 4.7% and Ethiopia with eight tenders and a share of 4.7% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 37 tenders, followed by Kenya with seven and Oman with four tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in April 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 26 tenders and a 52% share, followed by thermal with 21 tenders and a 42% share and wind with one tender and a 2% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in April 2021, with 100 tenders, followed by Power Plant (25) and Generation Equipment (22).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 117 tenders and a 69.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: 35 tenders and a 20.7% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 14 tenders and an 8.3% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: two tenders and a 1.2% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: one tender and a 0.6% share.

Power tenders in April 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Air Liquide (France) and Sasol (South Africa): 600MW from one tender
  2. Kurdistan Regional Government (Iraq): 25MW from one tender
  3. National Lotteries Commission: 5MW capacity from one tender.
