Power industry contracts in March 2021: Asia-Pacific leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 109 contracts and a share of 38.5% during March 2021, followed by Europe with 99 contracts and a 35% share and North America with 51 contracts and an 18% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with 17 contracts and a 6% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with seven contracts and a 2.5% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 178 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 102.

Solar tops by technology in March 2021

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 137 contracts and a 52.1% share, followed by wind with 95 contracts and a 36.1% share and thermal with 15 contracts and a 5.7% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment during March 2021, with 96 contracts, followed by Power Plant (95) and Electricity Procurement (69).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 108 contracts and a 38.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: 93 contracts and a 32.9% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 53 contracts and an 18.7% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 12 contracts and a 4.2% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: nine contracts and a 3.2% share
  6. Electricity Supply: seven contracts and a 2.5% share
  7. Others: one contract and a 0.4% share.

Power contracts in March 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Thailand): 1,700MW from one contract
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,200MW from four contracts
  3. Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Malaysia): 823.06MW capacity from 30 contracts.

Power contracts in March 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Korea Gas (South Korea), Korea Western Power (South Korea) and TPI Polene Power (Thailand): 1,700MW from one contract
  2. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 500MW from one contract
  3. JSW Energy (India): 450MW capacity from one contract.
