Oil was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of tenders for the quarter, accounting for 405 tenders and a 78.5% share, followed by Coal with 66 tenders and a 12.8% share. Gas stood in third place with 45 tenders and an 8.7% share.

Looking at global power tenders activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the top position in terms of number of tenders during Q3 2020 with a 47.8% share.

The proportion of tenders by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 306 tenders and a 59.9% share
  2. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 183 tenders and a 35.8% share
  3. Project Implementation: 14 tenders and a 2.7% share

  5. Power Purchase Agreement: three tenders and a 0.6% share.

North America leads thermal tenders activity in Q3 2020

Comparing tenders activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 306 tenders and a share of 59.9% during Q3 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with 104 tenders and a 20.4% share and Middle East and Africa with 50 tenders and a 9.8% share.

In fourth place was Europe with 46 tenders and a 9% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with five tenders and a 1% share.

Thermal technology tenders in Q3 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. National Energy Regulator of South Africa (South Africa): 12,000MW from one tender
  2. Ceylon Electricity Board (Sri Lanka): 300MW from one tender
  3. Government Of Haiti (Haiti): 190MW capacity from one tender.
