Adani Energy Solutions, part of Indian conglomerate Adani Group, has commissioned the 400kV Khargar-Vikhroli transmission line connecting Mumbai with the country’s national grid.

The Khargar-Vikhroli transmission line will enable additional power to be brought into the capital city of Maharashtra state to meet its growing electricity demand.

The transmission line includes 74 circuit kilometres of 440kV and 220kV transmission lines and a 9,500m², 1,500MVA, 400kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) at Vikhroli.

This is the first substation of its kind in the city.

The system has been designed vertically, with the 400kV and 220kV GIS stacked to reduce space requirements.

The transmission line will bring an additional 1GW of power to the city to mitigate instances of blackouts in the future.

The line is crucial as the city’s existing transmission capacity is not sufficient to transmit any further power.

With the project now commissioned, Mumbai’s grid can improve its reliability and stability.

This will also increase the city’s sustainability, with bullet trains for commuters, metro rail and city railways. It will also supply reliable electricity to commercial and residential establishments.

Mumbai’s electricity grid recently failed twice, in February 2022 and October 2020, blacking out areas of the city for considerable periods.

Adani has developed the transmission line, which is expected to have a life of 35 years, under a build-own-operate-maintain model.

The company secured approval for the project from the state regulator, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission, in early 2021.
