Mammoet has been selected to manage the marshalling of monopile foundations for RWE’s Nordseecluster A wind farm in Germany and Thor wind farm in Denmark.

The projects are among the largest offshore wind farms in Europe, with Nordseecluster’s two phases, A and B, aiming for up to 1.6GW, and Thor targeting more than 1GW capacity.

Mammoet will oversee the load-in, temporary storage and load-out of 116 XXL monopiles for the two wind farms at Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The largest monopiles will weigh 1,700t and measure 96m in length.

Mammoet plans to move more than 100 monopiles during a year-long operation at the site.

Buss Terminal Eemshaven managing director Marc Wegman stated: “Mammoet has a proven track record for managing the movement of monopiles safely and efficiently. Having them by our side during the planning stage has been invaluable. We look forward to working with them as we move into the assembly phase.”

The process involves offloading the monopiles using a RoRo linkspan ramp and transporting them with self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

The SPMTs will transport the monopiles to storage dunes, ready for shipment to the North Sea wind farms in German and Danish waters.

Mammoet project manager Wouter Santen stated: “This is a complex marshalling operation, with large components for both farms needing to be moved and managed on a single site.

Combining our specialist heavy transport equipment with our engineering experience of monopile handling, we are delighted to support the development of these significant offshore wind projects concurrently.”

RWE secured the planning permit for the first phase of the Nordseecluster, Nordseecluster A, in June 2024. Construction on the project is set to commence in 2025, with full commissioning planned for early 2027.
