US technology giant General Electric (GE) has secured a gas turbine supply order from Mass Global Investment for a new 3GW power plant to be built in Bismayah, Iraq.

GE will supply eight units of its advanced 9F.03 gas turbines, which are adjustable to meet fluctuating power demands and environmental mandates.

GE’s advanced gas path (AGP), that uses cooling and sealing, is retrofitable to 9F.03 units to enable commonality across installed units.

The company’s advanced F-class gas turbines are said to be ideal for combined-cycle applications with 99.8% average reliability.

The gas turbine fast-start reduces time across the entire start sequence, lowering start-up emissions, while the compressor increases reliability and availability in addition to reducing periodic inspections and maintenance costs, GE said.

Bismayah plant will be developed in two phases, with each having power generation capacity of 1,500MW.

This project is being developed as part of an independent power producer (IPP) deal between Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and Mass Global Investment.

Figures released by International Energy Agency show that Iraq need to increase its power generation capacity by close to 70%, with an additional 70GW of capacity by 2035 in order to meet energy needs in the country.

The study also states that Iraq needs to shift from the traditional oil-fired power mix to more efficient gas-fired generation.
