Danish wind turbine maker Vestas has secured an order from Renova, a Japan-based renewable energy developer, to supply wind turbines totalling 55MW capacity.

The turbines will be installed at Renova’s Reihoku Amakusa onshore wind project in Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture.

Vestas will provide 13 of its V117-4.2 MW turbines for the project, deployed on a high-tower system with 112m hub heights to unlock new wind resources at higher as well as more consistent wind speeds.

The company has put in place an Active Output Management 5000 service agreement for the project, with a duration of 20 years.

Vestas will start turbine delivery in the fourth quarter of 2024. Commissioning of the turbines is expected to be completed in 2026.

The wind farm will generate enough clean energy to power 25,000 Japanese households.

Vestas Asia-Pacific president Purvin Patel stated: “We are delighted to once again partner with Renova. This will be our first collaboration in Japan, building upon the success of our previous three projects in Vietnam.

“We remain committed to contributing to Japan’s carbon neutrality goal through our industry-leading wind energy solutions and strong partnership with our customers.”

The wind farm is owned by Renova, which holds a 38% stake, along with SMFL MIRAI Partners and NEC Capital Solutions, each holding a 31% interest.

In March 2023, Renova arranged funding for the project from Aomori Bank, Bank of Fukuoka, Gunma Bank, Nanto Bank, Nishi-Nippon City Bank, San-In Godo Bank, San Ju San Bank and Shiga Bank, with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking as lead manager.

Renova also entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SMFL MIRAI Partners and NEC Capital Solutions related to the transfer of equity interest in the project.

The MoU gives Renova the option to increase its stake to 90%.
