Construction company Black & Veatch has announced the substantial completion of Mitsui & Co’s Three W Solar project, a 150MW-direct current (MWdc)/110MW-alternating current utility-scale solar power facility in Texas, US.

The project, situated on around 875 acres near Hillsboro, has received approval from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the final requirement to connect the facility to the state’s power grid.

It represents Mitsui’s first entry into utility-scale solar generation in the US and is described by the company as a key milestone within its renewable energy strategy.

Following regulatory approval, the facility is being turned over to Mitsui’s operations and maintenance teams.

Black & Veatch served as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for both the solar facility and associated collector substation infrastructure.

Black & Veatch fuels and natural resources president Narsingh Chaudhary said: “Energy diversification is becoming increasingly important as organisations position themselves for future growth and evolving power needs.

“We are proud to support Mitsui's energy strategy through the successful delivery of Three W Solar, a project that strengthens its energy portfolio and contributes to Texas' growing generation capacity.”

Construction and commissioning began in 2024, with the team completing installation of all racking piles, delivery and installation of the generator step-up transformer, and all commissioning activities required for commercial operation.

The Three W Solar facility is expected to provide electricity for up to 45,000 homes.

Mitsui & Co senior vice-president and divisional operating officer Shinya Umehara said: “Achieving this milestone means a more resilient power grid for communities in Texas and we are proud to be part of the next stage of renewable energy in the region.

“This represents a commitment to the communities in Texas looking at the future energy demands and the innovative response to the needs these demands present. We are thankful for Black & Veatch’s expertise and support throughout the entire project life cycle.”

The project adds to Texas’ overall solar generation capacity and advances efforts to diversify the state’s energy supply.

In March 2026, Formosa Heavy Industry Corporation appointed Black & Veatch to deliver engineering design services for a new 2×1.2GW H-class combined cycle power station planned in Mailiao, Taiwan.
