Apex Clean Energy has awarded a contract to Denmark-based wind turbine maker Vestas to repower its Downeast Wind project in the US state of Maine.

Vestas’ scope of work includes the supply, delivery and commissioning of 30 of its V150-4.2 MW turbines.

The Danish corporation will also service the turbines under a multi-year active output management 5000 agreement.

Delivery of the turbines is expected to start in the second quarter of next year, with commissioning set to take place in the fourth quarter of the same year.

Once built, the Downeast Wind project will produce sufficient energy to meet the needs of more than 37,000 households annually.

The project in rural Washington County, Maine, is estimated to cost more than $235m.

During its construction phase, more than 300 direct jobs and more than 600 indirect jobs could be created. Throughout this period, the state could benefit from more than $156m in direct, indirect and induced spending.

Additionally, during its operational phase, six full-time jobs could be created.

In its expected 30-year lifespan, the wind farm is projected to pump up to $30m into the county by supporting local merchants, contractors, equipment suppliers and others.
