Spanish wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa has secured a contract from Equinor and Polenergia to supply turbines for the Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III wind farms offshore Poland.

With a combined capacity of 1.44GW, the projects will supply green energy to two million Polish households.

The company’s order includes the production, delivery and servicing of 100 SG 14-236 DD wind turbines, each with 14.4MW of capacity.

The order builds on a reservation agreement signed in February 2022.

Polenergia CEO Michał Michalski stated: “The ordered offshore wind turbines for the Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III projects are the flagship model of Siemens Gamesa, achieving impressive power output.

“The finalisation of contracts for the production and delivery of offshore wind turbines is crucial for the development of our projects in the Baltic Sea and represents a very important step in the development of the entire offshore wind energy sector in Poland.

“As early as 2027, clean renewable energy from Equinor’s and Polenergia’s Baltic projects is expected to power the national power grid. We are looking forward to that moment. The agreement with the supplier of offshore turbines brings us much closer to it.”

The recent environmental approval of the connection infrastructure by the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Gdansk propelled the projects forward, enabling the commencement of building permit procedures.

Equinor Poland country manager Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk stated: “With the final agreement signed with the turbine supplier for our Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III projects, we can move to the next stage of their development. We want to bring the best available renewables technologies to the Polish market, building a modern offshore wind power sector.

“Our goal is to provide Poland with clean energy from renewable sources based on the leading, most efficient solutions. The Bałtyk II and III wind farms will be among the first offshore wind farms in Poland. Their commissioning – scheduled for 2027 – will significantly strengthen our energy security, providing stable renewable energy for decades.”

In addition to Bałtyk II and Bałtyk III, Equinor and Polenergia are progressing with the Bałtyk I project.

This offshore wind farm, with a potential capacity of 1.56GW, will be situated 80km offshore Łeba.

The collective capacity of the three Bałtyk wind farms will be 3GW, enough to supply four million Polish households.
