Francis & Kaplan Turbine Main Shaft Seals Field Experiennce and Testing

By James Walker

Since the first James Walker main shaft seal, known as HydroSele®, was installed on a Francis turbine in Italy over 15 years ago, the company has continued to gain valuable experience in both real applications and on dedicated test rigs, and there are now more
than 50 successful systems running worldwide.

This paper describes the technical advances that have resulted from both field and rig trials, and how captured data is now being used to push the performance envelopes of these highly-developed sealing systems to cope with the most demanding run-of-river and pump-storage applications.
