Sword CTSpace, provider of document management and collaboration solutions to the engineering and construction industry announced its involvement with MAN Diesel on the construction of three turnkey diesel power plants for EDF.

Man Diesel is the world’s leading provider of large-bore diesel engines for marine and power plant applications. The company has signed the largest in its history with a total order volume of around €750 million to work with the French energy giant Electricité de France (EDF).

The French energy company has set MAN the task of constructing three diesel power stations as well as additional engine supply in its overseas Départements Réunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique. The order includes the delivery of 54 large, 18V48/60 diesel engines with a total power output of 1,025MW; enough energy to provide electricity to one million households.

The three turnkey diesel power plants

All of the power stations are designed as base load power plants which means that they are the primary source of electrical energy to the local power grid. The 54 engines will be assembled in Saint-Nazaire, greatly strengthening MAN Diesel’s French production facility. The three turnkey diesel power plants will go on grid between 2010 until 2012. MAN Diesel is the consortium leader for this major project. The two other consortium partners are Eiffage for construction work and Clemessy for electrical equipment.

“This order is a major challenge, because EDF is a highly demanding customer,” said the project management. “They have sophisticated customer requirements as well as the need to connect many different project teams. A committee of technical and economical project managers decided to implement the Sword CTSpace software solution to guarantee smooth and consistent document management.”

Communication challenges

With an order volume of around €750 million, a major challenge is to keep up efficient and accurate document management, despite a multiplicity of project participants. Correspondence via the Sword CTSpace solution offers a significant increase in project management efficiency. The communication is recorded digitally to 100% accuracy, assigned thematically, distributed securely and traceably to receivers and can be relocated easily with the help of the searching options. The service is available globally to all project participants via an internet connection.

“Ensuring consistent reporting is properly allocated to our employees and customers is very important for our project. With the pre-defined and user-friendly reports of the Sword CTSpace solution, gaining a fast and instant overview is simple and hence the document controlling becomes facilitated,” explains a MAN project member.
